Okinawa Milk Tea (Printable Version)

Creamy Japanese beverage with roasted brown sugar and black tea, served over ice for a refreshing caramel-like flavor.

# What You Need:

→ Tea Base

01 - 2 cups water
02 - 2 black tea bags, preferably Assam or robust Japanese black tea

→ Sweetener

03 - 3 tablespoons Okinawa brown sugar (kokuto) or dark muscovado sugar

→ Milk

04 - 1 cup whole milk, or oat milk for dairy-free option

→ To Serve

05 - Ice cubes

# How to Make It:

01 - Bring water to boil in small saucepan. Add tea bags, reduce heat, and simmer 3–4 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep additional 2 minutes for full flavor extraction.
02 - Remove and discard tea bags. Stir Okinawa brown sugar into hot tea until completely dissolved.
03 - Add milk and stir thoroughly. Return to low heat and warm gently without boiling for 1–2 minutes.
04 - Pour milk tea through fine-mesh strainer into heatproof jug to remove any tea residue.
05 - Fill two glasses with ice cubes. Pour warm milk tea over ice. Stir gently and serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The roasted brown sugar creates this incredible depth that regular sugar cannot match, almost like a warm hug in a glass
  • It comes together in under twenty minutes but tastes like something you would wait in line for at a specialty shop
  • You can easily adjust the sweetness and strength to match exactly how you are feeling that day
02 -
  • The key is dissolving the sugar while the tea is hot because cold tea makes it nearly impossible to get that smooth consistency
  • Never let the milk boil or it might separate and change the whole texture of your drink
03 -
  • Chill your glasses in the freezer for ten minutes before serving because the extra cold glass keeps the drink refreshing longer
  • Make a big batch of the tea and sugar base without milk then store it in the fridge for quick drinks throughout the week
