01 - Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
02 - In a separate bowl, cream unsalted butter and dark brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then molasses and vanilla extract.
03 - Gradually incorporate dry ingredients into wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
04 - Divide dough into two portions, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
05 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
06 - Roll dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 1/4 inch. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
07 - Make a small hole near the top of each cookie with a straw or skewer for hanging purposes.
08 - Place cookies on prepared sheets and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until edges are firm. Allow to cool on sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to cooling racks to cool completely.
09 - Pipe royal icing and add sprinkles or decorations as desired. Let icing set completely.
10 - Thread ribbon or string through the holes to hang ornaments.
